Short-Term Service Immersion Group Meeting

Now What? : Sharing Best Practices for Post-Immersion Re-Entry & Integration

This pre-conference session is specifically for faculty, staff, students and community partners working with short-term service immersion experiences. This may include international or domestic Alternative Breaks, mission trips, service learning and study abroad courses, delegations, and other experiential learning immersions. This grassroots movement is both faith-based and rooted in civic engagement and service learning pedagogies. Short-term immersion experiences, when done well, combine theory and action, service and reflection, with the hope for transformation of mind, heart, and spirit.

The Re-Entry & Integration process is often neglected when participants return to the everyday routine after these experiences. Community partners from a recent study with DePaul's Spring Break Service Immersion program expressed the hope for long-term impact on student's civic engagement and vocation: "I hope they don't relegate this experience to that one week of their lives." We hope to explore what it is that may contribute to a lasting impact.

Join us for a morning conversation sharing best practices and resources for post-immersion re-entry and integration. We hope to have representatives both from community partners who receive student groups and the faculty and staff who prepare and accompany students through these experiences.

In preparation for this conversation please do the following:

  1. Come prepared to share any re-entry and post-trip resources you use with your programing.
  2. Fill out this simple form so we can make a map of where you are engaged and upload any helpful resources, articles, documents, reflections related to this topic.
